WELCOME FATHER MICHAEL CARLSON…We are very happy to welcome to Most Holy Trinity Parish Father Michael Carlson, who was ordained to the priesthood on Saturday, July 7, 2007 in the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford by Archbishop Henry J. Mansell. Archbishop Mansell has assigned Father Michael Carlson to Most Holy Trinity Parish as a Temporary Parochial Vicar. He will arrive the week of July 16th and will be with us until the weekend of September 16th when he will return to Rome , Italy to resume his studies for his Licentiate or specialization in dogmatic theology, writing his dissertation on the subject of nature and grace. Father Michael Carlson is a native of Prospect, Connecticut and attended Wolcott High School and studied at the Catholic University of America in Washington , D.C. , where he studied music. He plays the flute, woodwind instruments and piano. He studied musicology, music composition with the intent of becoming a musician. He then studied for the priesthood at the North American College and the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome , Italy .We are very grateful to Archbishop Mansell for giving Most Holy Trinity Parish this wonderful opportunity of having a newly ordained priest with us. We look forward to welcoming Father Michael Carlson to our parish next week.

EXCERPTS FROM THE CATHOLIC TRANSCRIPT (JULY 2007 prior to ordination) by Mary Chalupsky:      “I was always interested and attracted to the things of the Church, especially as an altar boy serving at St. Anthony’s in Prospect,” said Deacon Michael Carlson, 27. ‘But I never thought about a priestly vocation.” There was one priest, however, Father Neil Fitzgerald, now deceased, a friend of the pastor, who predicted that young Michael would become a priest, and Deacon Carlson will be using Father Fitzgerald’s chalice at his first public Mass on July 8th in St. Anthony Church. Graduating from Wolcott High School with no priestly vocation in sight, he went off to Catholic University in Washington , D.C. , “not because it was Catholic,” but to study historical musicology.      “I wanted to be a musician,” said Deacon Carlson, who plays flute, woodwinds and piano. So he began by first studying composition with the intent of becoming a composer, and then switched to music history and literature. After jumping at the opportunity to study in Rome during his junior year, he said, he studied chant and sacred music… and felt the first stirrings of a call to the priesthood.      With awareness of a calling, he was drawn to the Dominican and Jesuit orders after graduating with honors in music history and literature. But something led him to apply to the Archdiocese of Hartford, and he was sent to St. John’s Seminary in Boston for a year.      But Deacon Carlson credits his assignment to the Pontifical North American College in Rome with changing his perspective on the world.      It’s been a good fit for me,” he said. “It’s not about what I study, but where I live.” “I attended classes at the Pontifical Gregorian University, founded by St. Ignatius over 500 years ago, in a classroom with about 200 people from all over the world studying to be priests, religious or ministers as laypeople – Romans, Italians, Spanish, African, Asian, Australian, South American. And we all come together to study theology. You really understand how the word Catholic means universal.”      Also impacting his life was the experience of being in a seminary so far from home. “Your classmates really become your brothers because you spend virtually every minute together”- gathering for morning prayer, eating in the refectory, walking to class together, gathering for evening prayer, studying, and even traveling together during the breaks.      Deacon Carlson, who’s now fluent in Italian and can read Spanish, French, German, Greek, Latin and some Russian, figures he’s traveled to virtually every nearby European country except those in Scandinavia.  “I was able to see things not as a tourist but as a pilgrim,” such as by celebrating Mass together in Israel or spending Holy Week in Krakow . “It was a very special, very formative time for me..”  “I was able to thrive in that environment,” he said ,”developing strong ties with people from the U.S. as well as from all over the world.”  He also did some pastoral work at the United States ’ naval base in Naples , Italy , ministering to military families assigned there. Another summer assignment was at Holy Spirit Parish in Newington in 2005.      “Through all of this there has been a profound sense of walking with Christ,” he said. “I’ve had these wonderful, wonderful experiences,” he noted, “but it would be arrogant to think that any of this is about me. It’s solely to serve. All of it is about serving the people of the Archdiocese of Hartford. That’s what I’m called to do, to serve as Christ served.”
