+ RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY + OCTOBER 2007 +

Why is the first Sunday in October designated as Respect Life Sunday?

This Sunday we focus on the Christian mission to Respect Life. The phrase captures the core of Jesus' teaching expressed in Matthew 25: "Whatsoever you do to the least of my brothers and sisters, you do to me." Jesus clearly states that our relationship to God is determined by our relationships with one another. This demands that Christians be attuned to anything that would diminish life at all its stages. From the womb to tomb, from birth to death, and at every stage between, we are called to treat all of life with dignity, respect, honor, and reverence.  Catholics are often seen as people who do respect life. Our efforts to end abortion or prevent embryonic stem cell research are well-known. Less publicized are the efforts made to assist those in prison, those dying of starvation or unsanitary living conditions, those dying because of systemic violence or abuse, or the thousands who die from the violence of war. The late Cardinal Joseph Bernadin clearly stated that all Christians are called to approach human life with a consistent ethic which he called "the seamless garment." We are to spend as much effort to fight war, poverty, hunger, death penalty and other life issues as we do on abortion and embryonic stem cell research.  How seamless is your "respect life" garment? How can you make sure that a consistent ethic of life is part of your Christian journey? ©2007 Liturgical Publications Inc, New Berlin , WI 53151

MASS FOR LIFE WITH ARCHBISHOP HENRY MANSELL / RESPECT LIFE SUNDAY, OCTOBER 7, 2007   -   CATHEDRAL OF ST. JOSEPH, HARTFORD    AT 2:00 PM At this Mass, parish pro-life representatives gather to pray with Archbishop Mansell for our ministry and to welcome new representatives who are to be commissioned. The Children’s Choir, under the direction of Dr. Ezequiel Menendez, Director of Music for the Cathedral, will be featured on this day. Please pray for the unborn, elderly, the disabled and the sick.

Respect Life Prayer

Dear God, We see life cheapened every day through abortion and other forms of abuse, through terrorism, and other acts of violence, and through neglect of children, the poor, and the elderly. In a world of plenty, we can forget that there is nothing more precious than human life. Give us the grace to see how we can make a difference, and encourage change in our culture. When we are discouraged, remind us of the Catholic monk Telemachus who stopped the gladiator games with an act of charity. Inspire us with the stories of Mary  and other mothers of unexpected pregnancies, who knew that every child is a gift of God's grace and is wanted by you in this world.  Encourage conviction in the hearts of those  who do not yet know or understand that a desire for choice is no reason to end any life and that you desire that all life come only to a natural end in you. And may Our Blessed Mother, under the mantle of Our Lady of Guadalupe, patroness of the Unborn, pray for us and our pro-life efforts.  Amen.
